In Monticelli Terme, near Parma, it all began by chance in 1924, when Italo Borrini, a local landowner, struck pressurised saltwater while digging an irrigation well 64 metres deep. After securing a government concession, he opened a temporary facility before starting construction of the permanent building in 1926, inaugurated on 15 May 1927.

The site's history is also marked by tragedy: months after opening, a gas explosion during a drilling operation claimed the life of Achille Borrini, the founder's son, who died helping injured workers to safety. The Liberty-style building, with its symmetrical H-shaped plan, today draws on two types of water from its seven remaining active wells: a salt-bromo-iodic water with salinity three times that of seawater, and a sulfurous water.

Insider tip — Terme Borrini operates in the storied spa town of Salsomaggiore Terme, where salt-bromine-iodine waters have been exploited since the 1800s for rheumatic and skin conditions. The facility maintains a traditional cure-hotel feel distinct from the modern wellness chains. Sessions typically include mud packs and thermal baths applied under medical supervision. Salsomaggiore's Liberty-style architecture makes strolling between treatments a pleasure in its own right.
