Insider tip — The Agatsuma Gorge is Gunma's most dramatic river landscape — the teal-green Agatsuma River cutting through volcanic rock walls for kilometers, with a hiking trail running the full length. Tengu no Yu (Tengu Spirit Bath) invokes the red-nosed mountain demon of Japanese folklore, guardian of these wild volcanic highlands. The spring discharges very hot, strongly sulfurous water from the same volcanic system that feeds famous Kusatsu Onsen just upstream. One of Gunma's most atmospheric gorge-side soaks.
