Wada Onsen, part of the Furusato Koryu community centre in Mihama, Fukui Prefecture, draws sodium-chloride thermal water at 40°C, with an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna.

Insider tip — Mihama-cho faces Wakasa Bay on Fukui's coast — a deeply indented bay of fishing villages, pine-forested promontories, and dramatic sea cliffs. The old Wakasa Highway (Obama Kaido) that carried fresh fish from this coast to Kyoto's imperial kitchen is Japan's most storied food road, recently rebranded the 'Mackerel Road' (Saba Kaido). Wada's Furusato Koryu Center community onsen preserves the traditional bathhouse culture of a coastal fishing community that once supplied the entire imperial court.
