Nestled in the mountains of Iwate Prefecture, in the heart of Tōhoku, the Appi Kogen resort was developed from the 1970s onward, driven by Japanese entrepreneur Hiromasa Ezoe, founder of the Recruit Group. The ski resort opened in December 1981 with four chairlifts, while the Appi Grand hotel, forerunner of today's establishment, opened its doors in 1985.

On 12 December 2021, the hotel joined the IHG international network and became the ANA Crowne Plaza Resort Appi Kogen. The complex's onsen, Shirakaba-no-Yu, is known for housing the largest open-air hot spring bath in the entire Tōhoku region, an attraction that draws bathers as much as skiers coming to enjoy the surrounding slopes.
