Sakurajima Magma Onsen takes its name from the active Sakurajima volcano in Kagoshima Prefecture, at whose foot it sits. Its sulfurous thermal water reaches 43°C (pH 6.5), filling an indoor bath and an outdoor rotenburo, with a sauna also on site.

Insider tip — Sakurajima Magma Onsen is Japan's most dramatically named and literally most volcanic hot spring — sitting directly on the flank of Sakurajima, an active stratovolcano that erupts hundreds of times per year. The water is heated by the same magma system responsible for the constant ash plumes visible across Kagoshima Bay. Sakurajima's volcanic soil produces the extraordinary Sakurajima daikon radish — the world's largest variety, growing up to 45 kg. Ash masks are handed out for free by the municipality; wearing one while soaking in magma-heated waters is a quintessentially Sakurajima experience.
