Maebashi Ekimae Tennen Onsen Yu-yu is an urban onsen near Maebashi station, Gunma prefecture. The sodium-chloride water is kept at around 40°C. It includes an indoor bath, an outdoor bath and a sauna, a convenient thermal stop within the city.
Insider tip — Maebashi is Gunma's administrative capital and the birthplace of Hagiwara Sakutaro (1886-1942), considered the father of modern Japanese poetry. His melancholic, urban lyric sensibility was shaped by the Tone River flowing through the city and Mt. Akagi's forested bulk to the north. Yu-yu Onsen directly in front of Maebashi Station is a model of Japanese urban thermal culture: natural artesian water tapped beneath a major railway terminus, giving commuters the gift of a hot spring soak before the train departs for Takasaki or Tokyo.
