Arima Onsen Taiko no Yu

Insider tip — Arima Onsen is one of Japan's three oldest hot spring resorts, and the Taiko no Yu facility draws the famous 'kinsen' gold water — an iron-rich, salt-laden spring that turns rust-red on contact with air. Nestled in the Rokko Mountains north of Kobe, the spa town was beloved by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who bathed here repeatedly in the 16th century. The deep amber kinsen water is prized for its warming and skin-nourishing properties, distinct from the clear 'ginsen' silver spring also found in Arima. Narrow stone lanes lined with traditional ryokan and gift shops create an atmospheric Edo-period townscape.
