Onagawa Onsen Yupoppo is a municipal hot spring facility in Onagawa town in Miyagi prefecture's Oshika District, uniquely located on the second floor of the rebuilt Onagawa train station — the terminus of the JR East Ishinomaki Line — where the town's recovery and reconstruction after the devastating 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami gave the hot spring bath the character of a symbol of communal resilience, integrated into the rebuilt station as an act of civic renewal in a community that lost over ten percent of its population to the disaster. The simple mineral waters warm bathers looking out over the rebuilt town and the sheltered bay of Onagawa, one of the hardest-hit communities of the 2011 disaster, where the compact geography of the fishing harbor — surrounded on three sides by steep hills — channeled the tsunami with catastrophic force.
