Onsen Kongo no Yu welcomes bathers in Katsuragi, Wakayama around sodium-chloride water, typical of the area's onsen. The water emerges at around 41°C. Facilities include an indoor bath, an open-air bath (rotenburo) and a sauna. A simple spot, valued for its neighbourhood feel.
Insider tip — Onsen Kongo no Yu is located in the Katsuragi area near the border of Wakayama and Nara prefectures, at the foot of Mount Kongo in the Kinki region. The saline waters drawn here are characteristic of the stratified marine sediments underlying the Yamato Plain and Kinki lowlands. Mount Kongo itself is a popular hiking destination, and the onsen provides a welcome recovery soak after descending from the summit trails. The facility's name evokes the rocky, enduring quality of Kongo-san and the long local tradition of mineral bathing in southern Kinki.
