The story of the H2O Hotel-Therme-Resort began with a very different idea: the Rotter family from Dechantskirchen originally planned a simple rest stop with a petrol station and shops. A soil analysis revealed substantial thermal water reserves, sparking a new concept unlike anything else in Styria at the time, designed specifically for families and children.

H2O-Hoteltherme GmbH was founded in 2002, followed in 2003 by an architecture competition aimed at creating something entirely new. The resort opened in 2005 near Bad Waltersdorf, in the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district, and has since gone through several expansion phases, the largest of which began in 2024 to keep pace with growing demand.

Insider tip — H2O Therme draws on the warm artesian waters of eastern Styria, a region long celebrated for its geothermal abundance along the Pannonian Plain margin. The facility's contemporary aquapark design features multiple indoor and outdoor pools suited to families and wellness seekers. Styrian thermal water is mild in mineral content but pleasantly warm, ideal for extended relaxation without skin irritation. The location near the Slovenian border makes it a natural stop on cross-border wellness routes.
