Insider tip — 'Kushira Sakura Onsen' in Kanoya, the administrative center of the Osumi Peninsula. Kushira was a coastal area of Kanoya facing Kinkowan Bay. Kanoya hosted one of Imperial Japan's major naval air bases — from which kamikaze missions departed in 1944-45. Today cherry blossoms (sakura) each spring transform the Kanoya Rose Garden and former airfield into a place of remembrance and renewal. The thermal waters of Osumi's volcanic geology provide rich sodium-chloride springs.
