Insider tip — 'Funatsu Onsen' (船津 — boat harbour) in a riverside district of Aira city where Kirishima volcanic chain rivers meet Kagoshima Bay. The name recalls the era of boat transport when Satsuma goods — sweet potato shochu, Satsuma ceramics, timber — were ferried through this valley to the bay and onward to Osaka. The volcanic waters of the Aira Caldera system flow warm and mineral-rich through Funatsu's neighbourhood bath.
