The lower bath (geto, 下の湯) typically offers a different pool configuration than the upper bath, but shares the same powerfully sulfurous volcanic spring — white-turbid, heavy with hydrogen sulfide, direct from the Kirishima volcanic system. Shimoedake's last major eruption (2011) was visible from this plateau. Bathing in the volcanic landscape it produced is a humbling experience.
