Kashiwabara Onsen is located in Satsuma, Kagoshima Prefecture. Its sodium-chloride water emerges at close to 39°C, with an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo bath and a sauna available to bathers.
Insider tip — 'Kashiwabara Onsen' (柏原 — oak field) in Satsuma-cho, Kagoshima — named for the great kashiwa (daimyo/Quercus dentata) oak groves that once dominated this highland terrain. The kashiwa oak is sacred in Shinto — its leaves are used to wrap kashiwa-mochi rice cakes for spring festivals, symbolising continuity because the new leaf appears before the old falls. In the ancient heartland of Satsuma province, this spring in the oak fields continues a tradition of communal bathing that reaches back beyond recorded history.
