Takarada Onsen, including its Takara no Yu bath, is set in Kumamoto, in the prefecture of the same name. The thermal, sodium-chloride water emerges at 40°C, pH 7.3. An indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo bath and a sauna are available.
Insider tip — 'Takara no Yu' (宝の湯 — treasure spring) at Takarada Onsen in the Kikuchi River basin area north of Kumamoto city. 'Takarada' (宝田 — treasure field) and 'takara no yu' (treasure spring) frame the thermal water itself as the treasure — an ancient view in Japanese culture where hot springs were considered gifts from the gods, precious resources to be shared communally. The fertile Kikuchi plain north of Kumamoto city has sustained farming communities since the Yayoi period; its thermal springs are part of the same natural bounty.
