Shin Hotaka Onsen Higaku no Yu, in Okuhida, Gifu prefecture, stands out for its iron-rich water with a pH of 6.3, at 43°C. An indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo bath and a sauna are on site.
Insider tip — Shin Hotaka Onsen Higaku no Yu is set deep in the Okuhida valley at the foot of the Northern Japan Alps, one of Japan's most spectacular volcanic onsen districts. The iron-rich waters emerge at high temperature from the volcanic bedrock, bearing a characteristic rust-gold color and pronounced mineral scent. The surrounding peaks of Hotaka and Yari rise dramatically, offering sublime views from the outdoor bath in all seasons. In winter, bathing under snow-laden pine branches with the frozen Kamikochi peaks beyond is an unforgettable alpine experience.
