Insider tip — Yukidaruma Onsen, the snowman spring, embraces the heavy snowfall that defines the Jōetsu mountain interior where the Myoko-Seki area receives two to three metres of Sea of Japan snowfall annually. Japan first Western-style alpine ski resort was established at Akakura in Myoko in the 1930s by Austrian ski instructor Theodore Weston, and this Jōetsu mountain spring community has maintained the spirit of snow country warmth and hospitality through a century of winter tourism.
