Inokura Onsen (Shirasagien), also in Tsu, Mie Prefecture, taps sodium-chloride thermal water at 41°C, offering an indoor bath, an open-air outdoor bath (rotenburo) and a sauna.

Insider tip — Shirasagien, the white heron garden spring, takes its name from the traditional Japanese belief that herons and egrets discover the healing waters of thermal springs by bathing their wounds in warm mineral pools — a legend attached to many of Japan most famous onsen including the white-crane discovery myth of Arima. The Inokura spring emerges in the forested western hills of Tsu City where the Ise coastal plain gives way to the cedar mountains of the Kii interior, and shirasagi egrets still hunt the mountain streams below the bath.
