The surrounding mountain villages were among Japan most isolated communities until modern road construction — their winter populations reduced to the hardiest families who maintained the sacred pilgrimage infrastructure through snowfields of three metres and more from December to April, preserving a remarkable highland culture of self-sufficiency and religious devotion.
