Insider tip — Yuyukan at Otaki Onsen serves the Okuchichibu mountain community of Chichibu City where the Otaki River descends through dense cedar forest from the high ridges of the Okuchichibu massif toward the Arakawa plain. The Chichibu mountain area is one of the most geologically diverse in the Kanto region — the ancient seafloor sediments and volcanic intrusions of the Chichibu Belt create mineral-rich mountain soils supporting rare plant communities, and the limestone quarrying that has supplied Tokyo construction since the Meiji era has carved dramatic white cliff faces into the surrounding ridge country.
