Insider tip — Fukuju no Yu, the lucky longevity spring, serves the Tantan district of Toyooka City in Hyogo Prefecture where the Oriental White Stork (konotori) — extinct in Japan by 1971 — was successfully reintroduced from Russian breeding stock and now nests freely in the paddy fields and wetlands of the Maruyama River basin. Toyooka is Japan most celebrated conservation success story: the reintroduction program that returned these magnificent birds to Japanese skies was led by Hyogo Prefecture in cooperation with local farmers who converted to pesticide-free agriculture to provide the frog and fish habitat the storks require.
