Okuzo Onsen, in Ōdate, Akita Prefecture, in northern Japan, heats sodium-chloride water to 41°C. The facility includes an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo and a sauna.
Insider tip — Okuzo Onsen serves the mountain forest hinterland of Ōdate City in northern Akita Prefecture — the homeland of the Akita Inu, the loyal mountain dog breed that became internationally famous through the story of Hachiko, the Akita who waited at Shibuya station for his deceased owner for nine years from 1925 to 1934. Ōdate City celebrates this canine loyalty in the Akita Inu Museum (Akita Inu No Sato) where purebred Akita dogs can be seen and petted, and the surrounding mountain forests the breed originally hunted preserve pristine beech and cedar wilderness of the Ou Mountains.
