The waters are intensely acidic (pH 1.7–2.1) with sulfur and aluminum sulfate, emerging at 51–94°C from the Yubatake ('hot spring field') — the iconic trough-cooled spring in the town center. The traditional 'yumomi' board-stirring technique cools water to bathing temperature.
