Baños de Cconoc

Baños de Cconoc is a natural thermal spring site near Curahuasi in the Apurímac Region of south-central Peru, where bicarbonate-rich hot springs emerge in the dramatic Apurímac Canyon landscape — one of the world's deepest canyons, carved by the Apurímac River (a major headwater of the Amazon) through Andean bedrock to depths exceeding 3,000 metres below the surrounding plateau. The springs have been used by the Quechua communities of the Curahuasi area for therapeutic bathing and the cultivation of the famous Curahuasi anise, whose distinctive aromatic quality is attributed partly to the mineral-rich soil conditions associated with the spring waters. The extraordinary geological environment of the upper Apurímac canyon, with its near-vertical walls, subtropical vegetation, and the contrast between the hot spring warmth at the valley floor and the glacier-clad summits of the Nevado Padreyoc above, creates a setting of remarkable natural grandeur for this traditional Andean thermal resource.
