Mount Apo Hot Springs on the flanks of the Philippines' highest peak, the 2,954-metre Mount Apo in Mindanao, draw on the geothermal energy of one of the country's most significant active volcanoes. The sulphurous springs, which emerge at temperatures of 40–70°C from the volcanic rock of Apo's lower slopes, have been used for centuries by the indigenous Bagobo and Manobo tribal communities who regard the mountain as sacred. The springs are accessible through the lush tropical forest of Mount Apo Natural Park, a biodiversity hotspot protecting endemic Philippine eagles, hornbills and pitcher plants. Combining a visit to these volcanic springs with trekking the summit trail of Mindanao's most iconic mountain creates an adventure of compelling natural and cultural richness.
