As early as a century before Christ, the Romans prized the waters of Monchique, calling them the 'sacred waters', and built a bathhouse in this remote valley of the Algarve's Serra mountains. In 1495, King John II of Portugal himself came here to rest, launching a tradition of aristocratic visits that lasted into the 20th century.
Set 250 metres above sea level amid lush vegetation, Caldas de Monchique today gathers a cluster of restored historic buildings, the only thermal spa in the Algarve. Its water, with a pH of 9.5, ranks among the most alkaline in the world and stands out for its richness in bicarbonate, sodium and fluoride.
