Termas de Carvalhelhos, in Boticas, in Portugal's Trás-os-Montes region, is known for its sparkling, iron-rich bicarbonate water, cool at around 12°C (54°F). A remote site set in rural northern Portugal.
Insider tip — The 'wine of the dead' tradition (vinho dos mortos) of Boticas is unique — during the Napoleonic invasion (1809), villagers buried their barrels to hide them. Exhumed afterwards, the wine had improved. The tradition has endured for 200 years.
