The Natural Pools of Seixal are volcanic rock pools on the dramatic northern coastline of Madeira island, Portugal, near the village of Seixal, where ancient lava flows have been sculpted by Atlantic wave action into natural seawater enclosures offering protected bathing in one of Madeira's most scenically spectacular coastal settings — framed by vertiginous green cliffsides dropping hundreds of metres from the laurel forest plateau directly into the pounding Atlantic below. The Seixal pools, located near a famous sea arch and adjacent to a small black sand beach of volcanic origin, provide swimming in clear Atlantic seawater within naturally enclosed volcanic basins that moderate the powerful swell characteristic of Madeira's exposed northern shore. The striking visual contrast of the black volcanic rock, the vibrantly green cliff vegetation, and the deep blue Atlantic, combined with the relatively undiscovered character of Madeira's northern coast compared to the tourist-developed south, makes the Seixal pools one of the island's most dramatic and authentically wild natural bathing experiences.

Insider tip — Arrive early in the morning at the Seixal Natural Pools to enjoy the calm and the salt waters.
