Medevi Brunn

Medevi Brunn is Sweden's oldest and most historically important mineral spring resort, founded in 1678 when the physician Urban Hjarne — the father of Swedish balneology — analysed the ferruginous and bicarbonate spring waters of the Vattern lakeshore in Ostergotland and established the first systematic mineral water drinking tradition in Scandinavia. The ferruginous and bicarbonate-carbonated spring waters of Medevi, whose iron content earned them their traditional reputation as a tonic, were celebrated in 18th-century Swedish literature and attracted royal patronage including visits from King Karl XI and the scientific naturalist Carl Linnaeus. The thermal spring park of Medevi, with its 17th-century yellow timber spa buildings, classical pump room, and setting on the wooded eastern shore of Lake Vattern, preserves the most authentic and historically complete 17th-century Scandinavian mineral spring environment in existence — a direct physical link to the founding of Swedish spa culture.
