Al-Sukhna Natural Springs is a geothermal site near Al-Sukhna in the Homs governorate of eastern Syria, in the steppe zone between the Syrian capital Damascus and the ancient oasis city of Palmyra, where bicarbonate-rich warm water surfaces from the deep Syrian geological platform. The area around Al-Sukhna, gateway to the Palmyra oasis and the Syrian Desert, has been an important waystation on trans-Syrian caravan routes since antiquity, and the natural springs would have served travellers crossing the desert. The legendary ruins of Palmyra — the 'Bride of the Desert', UNESCO World Heritage site and one of antiquity's greatest cities — lie just beyond, providing one of the ancient world's most evocative cultural backdrops.
