The travertine springs of Garm-Chashma in Tajikistan's Wakhan valley produce one of Central Asia's most visually dramatic geothermal landscapes, where bicarbonate- and sulphate-rich water at high temperature cascades over enormous mounds of deposited white travertine limestone, creating natural terraces and pools reminiscent of Pamukkale in Turkey. The ongoing mineral deposition continuously reshapes the travertine formations, giving the site a dynamic, living geological character. Set against the backdrop of the Pamir peaks and the ancient Silk Road corridor connecting China and the Mediterranean, this is one of the most extraordinary natural thermal formations in the world.
