Afyonkarahisar Kapliçaları in the Afyon province of western Turkey is recognised as Turkey's thermal capital, with 11 classified thermal resorts drawing on radon springs that rank among the most concentrated in the world. The sodium-bicarbonate radon waters, which emerge at around 40°C, are at the heart of a long thermal tradition associated with relaxation and wellbeing, and the city's thermal establishments attract visitors from across Turkey and the wider Middle East. Afyonkarahisar has been a thermal centre since Hittite times, and the dramatic black volcanic rock fortress rising 200 metres above the city gives it an unforgettable urban silhouette. The region is also famous for its exceptional white marble, pharmaceutical opium poppy cultivation and a clotted cream called kaymak that is considered the finest in Turkey.
