Terme Khmilnyk draws radoniferous and bicarbonated mineral springs in the town of Khmilnyk in the Vinnytsia region of central Ukraine, on the banks of the Southern Bug river in the heart of the Podolia upland, a landscape of silver birch forests, loess ravines, and agricultural plains that extends from the Dniester in the west to the Dnieper in the east in one of Ukraine's most fertile and historically complex regions. The Podolia plateau was one of the primary agricultural heartlands of the tsarist and Soviet bread basket, its black chernozem soil producing wheat and sunflowers on a scale that shaped the food security calculations of empires, and the forests of Vinnytsia oblast preserve the character of the woodland-steppe transition zone that once extended across the entire Ukrainian plain before the plough transformed it. The radoniferous springs of Khmilnyk, developed into a sanatorium town since the Soviet period and valued for relaxation and circulatory wellbeing, continue to function as a medical spa and leisure destination in the traditions of Ukrainian balneological culture.

Insider tip — Khmilnyk is Ukraine's most renowned radon-bicarbonate spa town, set in the forested Southern Bug river valley of Vinnytsia Oblast. The grand pre-war sanatoriums surrounded by pine forests retain a stately atmosphere, and early morning walks along the riverbanks through birch and oak woodland are among the most restorative experiences on offer. Visitor numbers from western Ukraine have grown strongly since the spa's renaissance in the 2010s.
