At the eastern edge of the Alvord Desert, in the rain shadow of Steens Mountain, these springs emerge along the geological faults that ring the basin of a lake that vanished roughly 15,000 years ago. A 1975 University of Oregon archaeological survey found evidence of human habitation here spanning 10,000 years. The twin concrete pools date back to the 1940s.
Insider tip — Alvord Hot Springs sits at the foot of Steens Mountain on the edge of the Alvord Desert, one of Oregon's most dramatic high-desert landscapes. The two corrugated-metal bathhouses channel geothermal water at around 170°F, cooled to soaking temperature in the tubs. Views across the ancient playa stretch for dozens of miles under enormous Great Basin skies. A small fee is collected by the adjacent ranch; bring cash and self-register.
