Hot Wells near San Antonio, Texas, preserves the site of one of the great American spa resorts of the late 19th century, where deep artesian wells drilled in the 1890s struck sulphurous hot water that was developed into a resort attracting Buffalo Bill, Sarah Bernhardt, and Theodore Roosevelt to soak in the Texas mineral waters. The original grand hotel burned and the resort declined, but recent restoration efforts have preserved the surviving artesian plunge pools as a public park on the San Antonio River, returning access to the historic sulphurous springs to the city.
