Hot Creek Springs in the Long Valley Caldera of Mono County, California, is a natural geothermal system within the Hot Creek Geological Site where sulphurous thermal water mixes with surface stream water in a complex that is managed by the Inyo National Forest. While the main Hot Creek swimming area has been closed due to increased volcanic activity, the associated springs and thermal features continue to draw geological visitors to one of the most scientifically significant geothermal zones in the contiguous United States. The extraordinary Long Valley Caldera landscape — a supervolcanic depression 32 km long created by a catastrophic eruption 760,000 years ago — provides a geologically unmatched setting for the observation of active geothermal phenomena.
