Tucked near the City of Rocks in the New Mexico desert, Faywood Hot Springs carries a history stretching back centuries: the Mimbres people frequented the site long ago, as stone mortars found nearby attest. As early as 1859, William Watts built the first hotel and bathhouse, before the Hudson family renamed the property in 1879.

Its golden age arrived in 1896 with the Casa del Consuelo, a 60-room hotel once regarded as the finest in the New Mexico Territory. After falling into disrepair post-1952, the site was revived in 1993 as a modern hot-springs retreat, keeping the quiet, mineral-rich atmosphere that drew travelers -- and Apache visitors before them.

Insider tip — Faywood Hot Springs sits in the Chihuahuan Desert of southwestern New Mexico, where iron-rich geothermal water rises through fractured basalt near the historic Fort Cummings trail. The pools range from shaded indoor soaking tubs to open-air celestial bathing under vast desert skies. The high mineral content leaves a faint ochre stain on stone, testament to the iron loading in the water. Night bathing here, with the Milky Way arching overhead and coyotes calling in the distance, is an experience unique to the American Southwest.
