Tucked into the canyon village of Jemez Springs, New Mexico, the Bath House stands among the very first structures built on this site between 1870 and 1878. Local history tells of settlers in 1860 who heard a roar and found a spring had erupted like a geyser; a stone wall was raised around the resulting pool, foreshadowing the building that stands today. First run by the Otero and Perea families, then by Charlie Clay in the 1920s, the property later passed to Catholic priests before being sold to the Village of Jemez Springs in 1961.
Now a State Historical Site, this century-old bath house still holds its large cement tubs fed by the local mineral waters, a living trace of the wellness tradition that shaped the entire village around it.
