Yomase Onsen is a hot spring resort in the Yomase area of Yamanouchi Town, Shimotakai County, Nagano Prefecture, part of the greater Shiga Kogen highland resort zone that encompasses one of the largest ski areas in Asia and one of the most celebrated snow monkey viewing sites in Japan. Yamanouchi Town is home to the famous Jigokudani Monkey Park where wild Japanese macaques bathe in natural hot spring pools, one of the most iconic wildlife viewing experiences in Japan and an internationally recognized symbol of Japanese winter nature tourism. The onsen at Yomase contributes to the rich thermal bathing infrastructure of the Shiga Kogen area, where volcanic activity beneath the highland plateau generates abundant hot spring resources that warm both the famous monkey pools and the numerous ryokan and hotel bathing facilities serving the human visitors who flock to this spectacular mountain resort.
