Momiji is a prominent kijo in Japanese folklore. Her story, known as the Legend of Momiji, is primarily associated with the regions of Kinasa, Togakushi, and Bessho Onsen in Nagano Prefecture. The central narrative involves the hero Taira no Koremochi battling and ultimately defeating the kijo named Momiji, who resided on Mount Togakushi.
Insider tip — Izura Onsen on the Ibaraki Pacific coast is bound up with the art historian Okakura Tenshin, who built his hexagonal Rokkakudo contemplation pavilion on the dramatic Izura cliffs and made this coast a cradle of modern Japanese art. The coastal onsen draws sodium-chloride waters near the rocky Pacific shore, in a landscape that inspired some of the most important figures of the Meiji-era Japanese cultural renaissance who gathered here above the crashing northern Pacific surf.
