Tokachidake Onsen

Tokachidake Onsen is a mountain hot spring in Kamifurano Town, Sorachi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, located at an elevation of 1,280 meters on the flank of Mount Tokachidake within the Daisetsuzan National Park, making the Ryoun-kaku inn at the spring the highest-altitude hot spring resort in Hokkaido. Mount Tokachidake is an active stratovolcano in the Daisetsuzan volcanic group whose eruptions in 1926 and 1988 are among the most significant volcanic events in twentieth-century Hokkaido history, and the sulfurous springs at Tokachidake Onsen are a direct product of the geothermal activity of this still-active volcanic system. The dramatic alpine setting, with panoramic views across the volcanic caldera and the surrounding Daisetsuzan peaks, combined with the intensely sulfurous waters of the high-altitude springs, makes Tokachidake Onsen one of the most adventurous and spectacular hot spring destinations in all of Hokkaido.
