Usami Onsen is a hot spring resort in Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture on the eastern Izu Peninsula, whose iodine-rich mineral waters have attracted bathers to this coastal onsen community since ancient times, benefiting from the extraordinary natural beauty of the Izu Peninsula's volcanic Pacific coastline and the proximity to the larger Ito Onsen resort area. Ito City is known as a gateway to the scenic Izu Peninsula and for its connection to the Tokugawa shogunate period when the English navigator William Adams, known in Japan as Miura Anjin, built Japan's first Western-style sailing ship at Ito on behalf of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1604, and the city's maritime and thermal bathing heritage together define its distinctive coastal character.
