Higashi-Naruko Onsen

Higashi-Naruko Onsen is tucked within the Naruko-Osaki corridor of Miyagi Prefecture, a river-carved zone in the Tohoku highlands where multiple distinct onsen villages have coexisted for centuries. This eastern branch of the Naruko cluster sits among cedar slopes and narrow gorges, maintaining the intimate atmosphere that distinguishes Tohoku's mountain spa culture from its more commercialised counterparts elsewhere in Japan.

The water is sulfurous — its mineral character registering on the senses with a faint, volcanic trace — and the slightly acidic pH of 6.5 contributes a delicate astringency that regular bathers find bracingly refreshing.
