Toshichi Onsen

Toshichi Onsen occupies the distinction of being the highest-elevation onsen in the Tohoku region, rising at approximately 1,400 meters within the Towada-Hachimantai National Park in Hachimantai City, Iwate Prefecture, accessible by mountain trail near the summit plateau of Mt. Hachimantai—a broad, lake-studded volcanic massif whose gentle highland terrain allows hikers of all abilities to experience Japan's finest northern alpine landscape. The sulfurous waters carry the volatile volcanic compounds of a spring at extreme elevation, where the combination of thin mountain air and mineral soak delivers an invigorating warmth of particular depth and immediacy, as if the volcanic earth reaches up to match the cold thin air above.
