Echigo Yuzawa Onsen occupies one of Japan's most storied mountain spa towns, set in a deep Niigata valley that receives some of the country's heaviest snowfall and inspired Nobel laureate Kawabata Yasunari to open his novel Snow Country with the famous line that has since become synonymous with the Joetsu landscape.
