The Baths of Payas Sokullu Mehmet Paşa form part of the magnificent Sokullu complex in Payas (Yakacık), Hatay Province, on the eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey near the ancient Cilician-Syrian border. Grand Vizier Sokullu Mehmet Paşa, one of the most extraordinary statesmen in Ottoman history who served three successive sultans over more than two decades as Grand Vizier, commissioned this sprawling complex — including a caravanserai, mosque, bazaar, and hammam — to transform a strategic coastal town into a model Ottoman urban centre. The hammam, attributed to the master architect Mimar Sinan, represents the integration of bathing into the Ottoman vision of a complete urban complex providing all necessities of travel, commerce, and devotion.
