Yeniçeri Baths

The Yeniçeri Baths (Janissary Baths) are a historic Ottoman hammam named after the Yeniçeri — the elite infantry corps that formed the backbone of the Ottoman military from the late 14th century until their dramatic abolition by Sultan Mahmud II in the Auspicious Incident of 1826. The Janissaries were garrisoned in barracks throughout Istanbul and major provincial cities, and their quarters typically included dedicated hammam facilities that served as some of the most intensively used bathhouses in Ottoman cities. These baths preserve the memory of one of history's most distinctive military institutions, whose members — originally selected as Christian boys through the devshirme system and raised as Muslims in imperial service — maintained rigorous standards of personal hygiene as both a religious requirement and a point of military discipline and pride.
