Rüstem Paşa Baths

The Rüstem Paşa Baths of Urla are a historic Ottoman hammam in Urla District of İzmir Province on the Aegean peninsula of western Turkey, associated with the extensive building patronage of Grand Vizier Rüstem Paşa, whose construction programme stretched across the Ottoman world from Istanbul to provincial Aegean towns. Urla occupies the ancient Klazomenai peninsula, one of the twelve Ionian city-states of Asia Minor and birthplace of the philosopher Anaxagoras, and its Ottoman hammam heritage reflects the cultural and historical layering of a district inhabited continuously since the Bronze Age. The baths served the community of this scenic Aegean peninsula town — today known for its organic wine production and its Cittaslow lifestyle designation — with the weekly bathing facility that was central to Ottoman social and hygienic life in the prosperous Aegean hinterland of İzmir.
