The Çifte Baths (Double Baths) of İpekyolu are a historic Ottoman double hammam in the İpekyolu (Silk Road) district of Turkey, whose name evokes the great transcontinental trade route that connected China to the Mediterranean and whose Anatolian segments passed through some of the most historically consequential landscapes in the ancient and medieval world. As a çifte hamam, the complex featured twin bathing halls serving men and women simultaneously in separate but architecturally mirrored sections, following the classic Ottoman design that maximised social utility by allowing the entire community to use a single facility throughout the day. The name İpekyolu (Silk Road) preserves the memory of the extraordinary commercial networks that defined Anatolia's economic and cultural geography across two millennia, and these baths served a community whose wealth and cosmopolitan character were shaped by the flow of goods, peoples, and ideas along these transcontinental routes.

Insider tip — Çifte Hamam (double bath) of İpekyolu (Silk Road), a district of Van. Van is the great Kurdish metropolis of Lake Van (3755 km², the largest lake in Turkey), with its Urartian citadel (9th c. BC) and the Van cat with its odd-colored eyes. Lake Van is alkaline (pH ~9.8).
