Şeyh Baths

The Şeyh Baths are historic public baths in Tire, a prosperous Aegean market town in İzmir Province, western Turkey, named after a local Sufi sheikh whose spiritual authority in the community was honoured by attaching his name to the hammam he endowed or blessed. In Ottoman Tire, as in all Ottoman cities, the neighbourhood hammam was named after its founder or the most prominent associated figure, creating a geography of named baths that mapped the social and religious hierarchy of the urban community onto the city's bathing facilities. The Şeyh Baths served the residents of Tire's Sufi-influenced neighbourhood community in the weekly bathing ritual that combined religious obligation with social pleasure in one of the most traditionally Ottoman market towns of the western Aegean hinterland.
